‘I live best in the open landscape’, White, K. Across the Territories (quote from a Swedish poem).
My work reflects a deep love of the island experience and environment, absorbed over many years. The natural, manmade and historical impacts on fragile lands also fascinate me. When I look at the vast skies, horizons and layers of landscapes, the quality of the light can be second to none, often creating purity of colour and a surreal experience. As well as the smallest details and diversity of the island’s ancient rocks, plant life and shores, the organic debris, the fragile remnants of birds, animals and plants, play their part.
I use a variety of media, pen and ink, digital photography, charcoal, watercolour and acrylics for outdoor work and exploration. Recently I have discovered the experience of taking larger supports out for exploration ‘en plein air’, helping me to achieve more expressive mark making. I use this work as a record to help my next process and progression to finished work. Mainly using oils I strive to achieve light and translucency in colour, and a free flowing drawing line.
I follow my heart to immerse myself in the environment which surrounds me.
