Art on the Map 2012

Wind, water, sea, and sky impossible to capture, ever-changing but amazing, the reasons to paint. I try to distil the elements of North Uist so that you can smell the salt in the air and feel the westerly wind against your face. Bluish coastal light, clear and sparkling on a good day, intense and brooding on a stormy one, make for inspirational subjects.

Using watercolours in a contemporary way, but still staying true to their fluid and transparent qualities, I work hard to bring the island to paper. The best atelier papers and intense lightfast pigments are applied with brushes and often experimental techniques. Controlled mayhem on the page sometimes!

After spending many summers on the Hebrides and West Coast, I came to Uist many years ago, and eventually moved here in 2003. As well as working at the Hebridean Smokehouse, I also help out on our croft where we keep Aberdeen Angus cross cows, black Hebridean sheep, and a posse of Scots Grey chickens.

I have exhibited at public and private showings in East Anglia, Inverness, and here on the islands and my work is in many private collections in Scotland, UK and overseas.

Commissions welcome.
